Step 1: Empathize

GOAL: Create a community in which job seekers are able to explore opportunities, write and read job reviews, instant message with one another, and customize their profiles.

FUNCTION: Users have access to an activity feed in which they would be able to stay up to date with posts from their friends and hiring companies.

STYLE: The goal for the style of the project was to create a look and feel which was professional, but not too serious. The styling of the platform would be indicative of a social platform, and not look too plain and dry.

Step 2: Define

1. Find a balance between professionalism and visual appeal when creating the overall style of the project.

2. Make sure users are able to perform all tasks easily, and know that every feature is available without needing to research features.

3. Allow users to be able to get ample information at a glance, without having to spend too much time on any given screen.

4. Minimize the amount of written instructions on the screen, in order to contribute to the theme of efficiency.

Reviews Page

Ideate

  • Create a platform that looks and feels like a blend of a professional website and a social media site.

  • The color blue fits perfectly here, because of its professional nature, as well as its association with social media platforms.

  • By placing reviews directly on job listings in a list of search results, users are able to see which jobs are the most desirable without having to perform their own research.

  • When a specific job is selected, users are able to glance briefly at the yellow rating bars to get a sense of where the majority of ratings are. This provides an extra visual which encourages scanning and discourages reading and interpreting.

Prototype

The project was completed in 5 weeks, and our team was able to incorporate all features that we had initially planned for. During this time, we were also able to create a mobile version of the platform, which could be implemented in app format, whether that be on the Google Play store or Apple App Store.

Mobile Site

By making a version of the website in mobile app form, we were able to produce an optimized experience for mobile users, and save them time from having to access the site through the use of a web browser. This is an effective method of decreasing wait times and increasing user retention.

In a world where 53% of mobile users abandon sites that take more than three seconds to load1, and where “website conversion rates drop by an average of 4.42% with each additional second of load time”2, it is clear that time is of the essence when increasing user retention.

User Profile Page

  • According to research done by Google, the average mobile website takes about 15.3 seconds to load.3 This does not include the time it takes for the user to search for the website on Google, or type the URL into their browser, which usually takes around 6 additional seconds.

  • By creating a mobile app for the site, a user would simply tap the icon on their screen, allowing for instant access and reducing wait times.
